Bryan understands that public safety and ensuring that our criminal justice system is fair and promotes rehabilitation all go hand-in-hand.  Throughout his career, Bryan has championed initiatives aimed at keeping Alexandria safe, while creating a compassionate criminal justice system that we can all be proud of.

Results

Bryan is proud to run on his established record of positive results. For example, U.S. News and World Report recently ranked Alexandria as the second-safest community in Alexandria (see article here).  Here are some of Bryan’s proven results:

  • Obtained a $500,000 grant to fund a three year initiative focused on targeting gun violence in Alexandria through enhanced prosecution efforts.
  • Implemented the Alexandria Recovery Court, which provides non-violent offenders with substance abuse disorder the opportunity to avoid incarceration by connecting them to intensive treatment.  Obtained a $500,000 grant to grow this program and make it a permanent fixture in the Alexandria court system.
  • Created and then expanded a Mental Health Initiative that similarly diverts non-violent offenders with mental health diagnoses away from incarceration and towards treatment.
  • Advocated for the adoption of  of body-worn cameras for the Alexandria Police Department and oversaw the growth of the prosecutor's office as part of this initiative, aiming to ensure transparency in criminal cases.
  • Maintained an open-file discovery process for all defendants and implemented mandatory ethics training for all employees, including non-attorneys.

Priorities

Bryan is committed to burnishing his office’s well-earned reputation of excellence. If he is fortunate enough to be re-elected, Bryan will focus on three priorities: 1) gun violence, 2) organized retail theft, and 3) protecting the vulnerable.

Gun Violence

While Alexandria is a very safe community, it is not immune from the specter of gun violence. While during his time in office, Bryan has already prioritized gun violence, obtaining convictions in a slew of gun-related crimes and securing a grant-funded prosecutor position to handle all gun-related felonies, he will continue to allocate significant resources to combatting gun violence and holding gun offenders accountable, seeking significant sentences to make sure our community remains safe.

Combatting Organized Retail Theft

The United States is facing a veritable plague of organized retail theft, and Alexandria is no exception. Retail theft results in higher prices for consumers and lower profits for mom-and-pop small businesses. Additionally, brazen organized theft inculcates a culture of impunity, which can reinforce a cycle of criminality. Bryan will prioritize organized theft prosecutions, teaming with partners such as neighboring jurisdictions and the federal authorities to address the whole of an organization’s activities as opposed to smaller thefts. Innovative use of prosecutorial resources like an investigative grand jury and racketeering charges can build stronger cases, with the hopes of deterring theft rings from operating in Alexandria.

Protecting the Vulnerable

Bryan remains committed to protecting the most vulnerable of Alexandria’s citizens. It is a sad fact that fraudsters and scammers frequently target the elderly, children, or individuals with a disability because they believe they are more likely to fall for a criminal scheme. Bryan has assigned experienced prosecutors to work on cases in which vulnerable victims are abused or scammed and will continue to prioritize these matters.
